Wygląda na to, że wiele osób nie odrobiło pracy domowej i najnormalniej w świecie skopiowało nieprawdziwą rewelację z serwisów typu news.com na temat blokowania przez MS Office 2003 z dodatkiem SP3 nadal dość powszechnie stosowanych formatów dokumentów, m.in. Office 97, 95 i Word 6.0.

Są to formaty (niestety) nadal względnie szeroko stosowane wewnętrznie np. przez nasze urzędy. Ponieważ nawet tak ważne serwisy jak consortiuminfo.org popłynęły z falą dezinformacji i dziennikarstwa typu kopiuj+wklej, a ponadto ta fala dotarła także do naszego kraju, postanowiłem dorzucić do tematu moje 2 grosze i przestrzec przed bezkrytycznymi wnioskami i cytowaniem bez sprawdzenia u źródła, szczególnie gdy temat jest tak kontrowersyjny.

Wiecie, że niejednokrotnie, choćby na tym blogu nie wahałem się uwypuklić (delikatnie mówiąc) nadużycia Microsoftu i jego sojuszników. Fakty wyglądają tutaj jednak tak, że już na jesieni 2007 był dostępny wpis #938810 w bazie wiedzy MS, a 25 września jego polskie tłumaczenie. Z tego co sprawdziłem, głównym problemem wersji polskiej jest nadal jej niepełność w porównaniu do wersji angielskiej, ostatnio zaktualizowanej 4 stycznia. Dopuszczam też zaniedbanie co do aktualizacji wersji angielskiej -- autorzy nie podają historii zmian.

W odróżnieniu od tego co stwierdzają newsy, jedynie istnieje możliwość zablokowania wszelkich formatów starszych niż np. Word 2007 -- formaty nowsze od Word 2.x (czyli m.in. Word 6.0/95/97) nie zostały zablokowane. Blokada jest związana z odpowiednim ustawieniem w rejestrze Windows. Zainteresowanym polecam sprawdzenie najważniejszej części artykułu #938810, czyli tabelki "Word file version table" prawie na końcu strony. Tabela zawiera informację "(This is the default setting.)" przy "Word 6.0 for Windows". Zresztą potwierdza już to pierwsza tabelka w artykule, pokazująca, że domyślne ustawienie dotyczy blokady formatów Word 2.x i innych mu współczesnych oraz starszych od niego. Ponadto ustawiając odpowiednią zmienną na "0" możemy całkowicie wyłączyć blokadę.

Czy zatem nie ma problemu?

Oczywiście nie byłbym sobą gdybym podzielił się tylko samymi dobrymi wieściami. Podstawowe wnioski z samego pomysłu blokowania obsługi starszych formatów dokumentów przez MS (jakkolwiek wygodne byłoby to do wyłączenia) są następujące:

Nie, wyłączenie blokady nie jest tak proste jak wyłączenie różnych innych (niejednokrotnie bardziej skomplikowanych!) opcji w programach MS Office. Edycji rejestru (czy bezmyślnemu uruchamianiu plików .reg) zawsze towarzyszą ostrzeżenia dostawcy programów. Poziom skomplikowania nieuzasadniony. Co mi to może przypominać? Ukrycie OpenDocument na liście formatów dostępnych w oknie "Otwórz" i "Zapisz" (został w MS Office 2007 przesunięty do osobnej funkcji importu), mimo faktu, że inne formaty jak Wordperfect, bardziej stratne przy zapisie od OpenDocument, znajdują się na standardowej, łatwo dostępnej liście. W przypadku obu ukrytych funkcji, użytkownik może traktować je jako trudne w użyciu, ryzykowne i nie dostępne w sposób standardowy zaraz po instalacji. Może to powodować rezygnację użytkowników ze stosowania formatów Word 2.0 (często stosowany "wspólny mianownik" rtf -- zwolennicy tegoż, zobaczcie jaki to się z czasem staje błędny wybór..) i OpenDocument, na rzecz OOXML (dostępnego już po instalacji, z kolorowymi ikonkami, bez ostrzeżeń i wpisów w rejestrze Windows).

Upada ważny argument za stosowaniem OOXML. Oficjalnie, format OOXML nigdy nie był wyraźnie promowany przez MS jako konkurent standardu OpenDocument, czyli interoperacyjność uniezależniająca nas od producenta programów (prawdziwy koszmar gdy ma się monopol). To głównie prasa poszukująca krzykliwych nagłówków i czytelnicy lubiący takie "wirtualne" konfrontacje wciąż utożsamiają "doc/xls/OOXML kontra OpenDocument" (wcześniej oo.org XML) bezpośrednio z "MS Office kontra OpenOffice.org".
Śpieszę przypomnieć, że oficjalnie, MS jako cel OOXML wyznaczył zgodność z "miliardami" istniejących dokumentów w jego formatach binarnych. Ciekawe czy autor tej strategii jest nadal z niej zadowolony? Okazuje się, że jeśli przyjąć iż (domyślna) zgodność z Word 2.0 i starszymi formatami jest wciąż istotna, właściwym wyborem dla użytkowników jest aktualnie OpenOffice.org.

Bez wątpienia zbliża się dzień ujawniający wycofanie się MS z obsługi standardu OOXML (mówię o standardzie ECMA OOXML, być może ISO/IEC OOXML, a nie formacie obsługiwanym MS Office 2007, który nazywam MSOOXML, na podobieństwo MSHTML). Na najbliższej konferencji dla partnerów MS związanej z już rozwijanym "MS Office 14" (trzynastkę Amerykanie pominęli pamiętając projekt Apollo) pojawią się prezentacje nowych funkcji nie zdefiniowanych w OOXML. Efekt: przestanie istnieć choćby jedna pełna i aktualizowana implementacja OOXML. Do tego czasu, jeśli wierzyć komitetowi w ECMA (i doniesieniom Roba Weira), aby nie ryzykować odrzucenia w głosowaniu w lutym 2008, z OOXML zostaną usunięte m.in. problematyczne "tryby zgodności" z Word 95. Efekt: MS Office 2007 już teraz przestanie być implementacją ewentualnego standardu OOXML, zakładając że kiedykolwiek nią był.
Na zarzut, że jestem drobiazgowy, odpowiadam jak zwykle: to nie ja jestem drobiazgowy, tylko tak sprecyzowane wymagania mają użytkownicy, vide: "nie używam pakietu X bo dokument mi się w nim rozjeżdża" -- wystarczy jeden niezgodny ze specyfikacją atrybut akapity by tak się działo w nieskończoność.

Załóżmy optymistycznie (wszak to czas noworocznych planów), że obawy naświetlone w poprzednim punkcie nie potwierdzą się. Czy wówczas jednak ktokolwiek mógłby założyć, że nie pojawi się aktualizacja MS KB #938810 dodająca wyłączenie obsługi (niebawem już być może "zbyt starego") OOXML v1? Wiele pamiętających minione lata w informatyce osób na poważnie obawia się tego. Pozostali mogą zaś już teraz obserwować dalszy odwrót MS od standardów w Internecie - przechodzenie ze standardów (obsługiwanych zresztą przez MS po macoszemu) HTML/W3C na kontrolowany przez siebie Silverlight.

Cel blokowania obsługi formatów to wg MS poprawa bezpieczeństwa. Jaka jest możliwa przyczyna tego, że filtry importu/eksportu pakietów takich jak KOffice czy OpenOffice.org obsługują sporą liczbę starych, własnościowych, binarnych formatów dokumentów bez niemożliwych do poprawienia luk bezpieczeństwa, a filtry od MS nie?. Możliwe powody to m.in.: (a) MS nie posiada kodu źródłowego importu/eksportu lub kod ten jest bezwartościowy a jego autorzy już dawno nie pracują w firmie, (b) MS nie posiada praw do modyfikacji tych funkcji (np. z powodu niekorzystnych wcześniejszych umów lub patentów).

To w końcu blokuje domyślnie czy nie blokuje? Bo chyba ciągle nie
jest to jasne, a o to głównie idzie spór. Nikt ne pisał przecież, że plików nie da
się otworzyć, tylko że jest to utrudnione.

Ale zobacz jakie pliki ("certain files") są zablokowane "by
default": najnowszy to Word 2.x. Zablokowanie innych to tylko możliwość, i to
mam nadzieję opisałem jako tako.
