Ujawniono rekordową liczbę uwag do Office Open XML
95 tez zgłoszonych przez religijnego reformatora Marcina Lutra jest (przynajmniej ilościowo) niczym w porównaniu z 3522 krytycznymi komentarzami zgłoszonymi do stowarzyszenia firm software'owych Ecma International odnośnie opracowanego Microsoft formatu Office Open XML (OOXML). Szczegółowe uwagi dotyczące problemów z tzw. interoperacyjnością formatu OOXML zostały zgłoszone przez przedstawicieli organizacji normalizacyjnych będących członkami ISO (Międzynarodowej Organizacji Normalizacyjnej).
Liczbę uwag ujawnił ostatnio Brian Jones, program manager MS Office. Stowarzyszenie Ecma, szwajcarskie ciało standaryzacyjne, rok temu ratyfikowało Office Open XML jako standard. Pewny sukcesu także w ISO Jones, posunął się wtedy do stwierdzenia, że tzw. wojna standardów została zakończona i na rynku jest miejsce dla dwóch niezgodnych ze sobą standardów. Wspomnijmy, że we wrześniu 2007 OOXML przegrał w głosowaniu nad szybkim trybem przyjęcia standardu ISO (ang. fast-track), a Microsoft jest oskarżany o zachowania korupcyjne, co nawet już zanalizowano metodami naukowymi. Na początku 2008 r. kandydatura OOXML jako standardu będzie rozpatrywana przez ISO w normalnym trybie.
Powróćmy jednak do spraw technicznych. Dokładna treść zgłoszonych uwag jest obecnie dostępna jedynie dla członków narodowych ciał standaryzacyjnych. Ponieważ jednak mamy do czynienia z dobrze zdefiniowanymi aspektami technicznymi formatu, można uznać że treść przynajmniej niektórych uwag pokrywa się z już ogłoszoną publicznie listą.
Biorąc pod uwagę rozmiar dokumentów opisujących format OOXML (ok. 6000 stron), zatwierdzenie standardu w Ecma nastąpiło szybko - po roku prac w grudniu 2006. W odróżnieniu od współczesnych praktyk, dokumenty nie były opublikowane w Internecie np. w formie stron www, a jedynie dostępne jako pliki doc. Fakt, że obecnie mamy do czynienia z ponad 3,5 tys. uwag, sugeruje że trwające rok prace w ramach Ecma nie usunęły najpoważniejszych defektów formatu i opublikowano normę tzw. okładkową, niewiele różniącą się od postaci oryginalnej.
W międzyczasie, przed zatwierdzeniem standardu, zmieniano samą formę organizacji zapisu dokumentacji OOXML, co nie ułatwiało śledzenia dokonywanych zmian osobom spoza kręgu Komitet Techniczny Ecma TC45 – Microsoft. Ponadto do swojego startu rynkowego przygotowywano coraz szerzej promowany pakiet MS Office 2007. Implementacja formatu istniała przed jego formalną standaryzacją, co nie jest niczym niezwykłym. Kluczowe jest jednak to, że ewentualne poprawki mogłyby załamać zgodność pakietu MS Office 2007 z rodzącym się standardem. Można sądzić, że zrezygnowano z udoskonalenia formatu przede wszystkim z tego powodu.
Brian Jones rozsądnie wyjaśnia, że wśród 3,5 tys. uwag znajduje się wiele duplikatów. Jeśli wyłowi się takowe, liczba uwag może poważnie się zmniejszyć. Prawdą jednak jest też, że nawet jeden problem zaakcentowany w pojedynczej uwadze (choćby niepoprawna funkcja zaokrąglania liczb mająca swe źródło w błędzie Excela) może wprowadzić oczekiwaną interoperacyjność lecz jednocześnie zaszkodzić wspomnianej zgodności z MS Office 2007. Można zrozumieć fakt, że Microsoft uznaje tą drugą cechę za ważniejszą, jednak to stawia pod znakiem zapytania sens standaryzacji formatu. Zgodność wsteczną z pojedynczą implementacją można osiągać o wiele prościej niż wikłając się w proces standaryzacji i tracąc silny wpływ na rozwój formatu. Pytanie o to, czy celem producenta MS Office nie jest zatem konkurowanie z już istniejącym standardem ISO pozostawiam do rozważenia.
